Film vs. Digital

While my digital rebel was temporarily out of service I found myself using my film camera quite a bit. It’s a Canon AE-1 that I found on craigslist for $50. I was just going through some of the shots I got and I really like the way they turned out. It’s similar to the digital vs. analog debates amongst recording engineers. The film shots are in no way perfect but there is a certain warmth to them that I haven’t seen with digital yet. You have to be a lot more on the ball when shooting with film because you only have so many exposures and you don’t want to waste any of them. Here are some shots I got this last fall when Kim and I took a trip to Rhinebeck for the NY sheep and wool festival.

The weather in August: Usually this time of year in Texas, you are melting into the ground at temperatures right around the 100-degree mark. Today, the weather is a beautiful 74 degrees in NY.
Iced Coffee: Yeah, I know they have this in Texas, but I never really got into it there. Here, iced coffee is served pretty much everywhere. I had a large french vanilla flavored iced coffee this morning while I was enjoying the beautiful weather and waiting for my laundry to dry. I have a feeling that iced coffee will always bring back memories of my first summer in the city.
People’s attitudes toward pets: Pets are everywhere and welcomed everywhere. You can bring your basset to a bar, your dachshund to the drugstore, or your weiner dog to the wash-n-fold.
People in general: We’ve come across some pretty nice people here. Just the other day Joey was riding his bike to work and his wallet fell out of his back pocket. Someone found it and turned it in to the police. Absolutely nothing was missing. How wonderful is that?!

So it’s 12:15am here and Aaron and I just made it home after a long day at Coney Island. We went to the Siren Festival which was insanely cool and had a lot of free beer. Frank hooked us up with VIP wrist bands so we could get back stage and drink free budlight for like 7 hours straight. Here are just a few of the many amazing sites we took in today.

Endless Vacation Day 46

Aaron and I are headed to L.A. this weekend so Kim decided to take her mom up on one of her free plane tickets and head home for the week. The airport is in Long Island so I escorted her to the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) this morning at Penn station. On the way back I hit the Apple store on 5th ave again just to see if I could make it in this time without a four hour wait. Luckily since I already purchased the iPhone I didn’t have to wait in this line.

I was able to go straight in and look for a screen protector but of course they were sold out. I was able to snap a few shots of the store though.

I’m gonna meet up with Aaron and Clay tonight at Union Square to grab some drinks and try to convince them to go see Batman with me. Then tomorrow is the Siren Festival at Coney Island which is free and supposed to be awesome. Really looking forward to seeing the Helio Sequence. Word.

Went to the SPOON show last night at Prospect Park. It was a killer show and the band that opened, White Rabbits, were really good too.

This is what the lines looked like at the Manhattan Apple stores all weekend.

The release of the iPhone 3G

Although I really wanted to buy mine from the 5th ave Apple store I wasn’t about to wait in line for 6 hours. Kim and I decided to hit the AT&T store instead which only had a 45 minute wait. Some old dude walked up and asked, “What is the purpose of this line?” to which someone answered, “The new iPhone,” and he goes, “You’re waiting on a phone with an eye in it?” Which everyone in line thought was really funny. I ended up getting the 2nd to last iPhone that they had in stock. There were some angry customers in line behind us which was pretty sweet. FYI if you don’t have a free upgrade available on your account, the 8 gig iPhone cost $400 as usual. I think the Apple advertisements were kind of mis-leading. Oh and if you’re planning on buying two phones you’ll need two people present.

Kim, Aaron, and I then met up with some friends at the Bowery Hotel for a free show with open bar.

A friend of ours was playing a show sponsored by Belvedere vodka. After several vodka martinis Aaron split off to hit another bar with our buddy Hugh from The Wildbirds and Kim and I went with Frank and Paris to grab some awesome pizza at Lombardi’s.
